Steelers’ Former Trade Target Jaylon Johnson Wasn’t Happy With The Bears’ Decision To Trade Justin Fields
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves embroiled in trade rumors as the 2023 season's trade deadline approached, particularly involving the Chicago Bears and their star cornerback, Jaylon Johnson. Despite ongoing negotiations, no deal materialized, leaving the Steelers unable to secure Johnson during the season.

During the offseason, hopes were revived that the Steelers might sign Johnson as a free agent. However, the Bears successfully negotiated a deal with Johnson, once again leaving the Steelers empty-handed in their pursuit of the talented defensive back. Nonetheless, Pittsburgh managed to acquire another Bears player.

In a trade coup, the Steelers obtained the former 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, Justin Fields. The Bears received a conditional sixth-round pick, potentially elevating to a fourth-round pick based on Fields' playing time in the 2024 season. The departure of Fields from Chicago left many of his teammates disheartened.

Johnson joined Kay Adams' show, Up and Adams, to discuss the departure of his former teammate to Pittsburgh. He was not happy about the idea of not having Fields around, but he started to prepare himself because he had seen the writing on the wall.

"If you truly believe in a guy, I feel like the speculations would've been shot down. For me, that's when I started preparing for it when the speculation and the questions weren't shot down so I was preparing myself for the worst. 'Ok, let's already process Justin being traded."

Despite the disappointment of witnessing Fields' departure, Johnson expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact his former teammate and friend could have in Pittsburgh. He elaborated on how Fields possesses the ability to elevate the team and fill a void that has persisted for quite some time.

"I think he brings a different element the Steelers haven't had in a long time. I know they have some really good, young wide receivers, tight ends, good running backs. I know they can do some explosive things with the weapons they have on offense. I think really the Steelers have needed that extra play-maker. I feel like they've always had a good, sound, solid defense. Defense always does what it's supposed to do. The offense has always held them back. Not really having too many explosive playmakers. Guys to be able to get the playmakers the ball. I think he can definitely go in there and do both."

Fields was a beloved figure in the city of Chicago, and his departure leaves behind a void for many fans and former teammates, including Johnson. Despite the change, Johnson emphasized that he will continue to cheer for Fields and wish him all the best in his next chapter.

"Seeing him going to the Steelers may just be another thing where I can continue to support him from the outside looking in. Wish him nothing but the best until, of course, until he plays us."

Entering the league with immense hype, the now 25-year-old Fields was a standout prospect from Ohio State. While he has displayed moments of brilliance in the NFL, he has also faced concerns, prompting the Bears to explore options beyond him. Surprisingly, his trade market value fell short of expectations, indicating a lack of confidence from many in Fields' abilities. Across his first three seasons in the NFL, Fields has amassed 6,674 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

Steelers' New QB Room Set To Go Viral

Prior to trading for Fields, the Steelers made a significant move by signing Russell Wilson to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum. This move represented a massive upgrade to their quarterback room at a remarkably affordable cost. With Wilson expected to be the starter, Fields is slated to serve as his backup.

However, there's speculation that the Steelers see Fields as their long-term franchise quarterback. Some analysts predict that Fields could challenge Wilson for the starting position and potentially earn it during the 2024 season. This looming quarterback competition adds an intriguing dynamic to Pittsburgh's season ahead.

Under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, the Steelers may explore innovative strategies, such as utilizing Fields as a rusher on occasion. As anticipation builds in the Steel City, excitement for the upcoming season has reached unprecedented levels.
